The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), consisting of the former socialist republics of Serbia and Montenegro, was proclaimed on 27 April 1992. On 4 February 2003, the FRY was transformed into a looser union known simply as Serbia and Montenegro. This state ceased to exist in June 2006 through three successive steps: on 3 June, the Assembly of Montenegro proclaimed the republic's independence; on 4 June, federal president and head of government Svetozar Marović resigned; and on 5 June, the Assembly of Serbia recognized Montenegro's independence and declared that the Republic of Serbia was the legal successor to the now-defunct State Union of Serbia and Montenegro.
